Check the Duplicates collection first
Open Photos → Collections → Utilities → Duplicates when it is available. Review each group before merging. Detection may take time after a large import, and not every similar image is an exact duplicate.
Compare quality and metadata
Open each candidate and use Info to check resolution-related details, file size, date, source, and edits. Apple describes the available metadata in its photo information guide. Keep the version that preserves the quality and context you need.
Treat edited and cropped copies separately
A crop, filter, markup, or format conversion may be intentionally different. Verify whether the edited result is used in a project, album, message, or document. Do not merge or delete merely because thumbnails appear the same.
Clean the remaining near-duplicates manually
Use Swyper to review imported groups one item at a time and hold candidates in the cleanup bin. Keep the AirDrop or import date as a boundary so unrelated personal photos do not enter the batch.
Common questions
Why is the Duplicates album missing?
Photos may still be indexing, no qualifying duplicates may be detected, or the current system may organize the feature differently. Leave the phone on power and check later.
Does merging keep the best quality?
Review Apple’s explanation shown in Photos and inspect the result. For irreplaceable files, keep a verified backup before merging a large group.
Why do AirDropped photos have different dates?
The visible date can depend on capture metadata, export behavior, edits, and import context. Use Info to compare the actual details.
