Protect the library before changing devices
Confirm how photos are stored: iCloud Photos, device backup, computer import, or another system. Make and verify independent copies of irreplaceable media. Apple’s transfer guide explains supported photo import methods.
Clean only the obvious clutter first
Remove accidental captures, expired screenshots, failed screen recordings, and exact duplicates you have reviewed. Leave emotional near-duplicates and complex event libraries until the new phone is working and the old device remains available.
Let synchronization finish
If iCloud Photos is enabled, connect both devices to power and reliable Wi-Fi and verify recent items, albums, edits, and videos. Do not erase or trade in the old phone until the new library and other important data are confirmed.
Continue the cleanup after setup
Once the new phone is stable, use Swyper or a month-by-month review for the remaining clutter. A slower cleanup preserves the excitement of setup without creating a data-loss deadline.
Common questions
Will fewer photos make iPhone transfer faster?
It can reduce the amount of data in some transfer methods, but actual time depends on storage, network, cable, device, and synchronization. Safety is more important than a rushed purge.
Can I delete photos from the old iPhone after setup?
With iCloud Photos, deleting on the old device can delete from the synchronized library. Erase the old device only through the proper handoff process after verifying the new one.
Should I empty Recently Deleted before trade-in?
Only after confirming the cleaned library and backups. Device erasure for trade-in is separate from permanently deleting items from the photo library.
