Deleted photos may still be in Recently Deleted

Photos and videos normally remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days. They can be recovered during that period, and they may continue to occupy space until permanently removed. Apple describes how to recover or permanently delete items in its Photos guide.

Only empty Recently Deleted when you are certain the batch is correct and you have protected anything important. Permanent deletion removes the easiest recovery path.

The storage display may need time to recalculate

iPhone Storage is a system estimate assembled from many categories. After a large deletion, indexing, thumbnail cleanup, iCloud synchronization, and storage calculation can continue in the background. Connect the phone to power and Wi-Fi, then check Settings → General → iPhone Storage later.

A restart can refresh the display, but repeated restarts are not a cleanup strategy. Confirm the items are gone from the library and Recently Deleted before assuming the storage screen is wrong.

Optimization and downloads can move in both directions

With iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage, the device manages local versions dynamically. It may download items you recently opened or replace originals with smaller copies when more room is needed. Apple explains this adaptive behavior in its storage documentation.

Because optimization is automatic, the Photos category may not fall by the exact size of the files you selected. Check total available space rather than expecting a one-for-one subtraction.

Check the largest categories before deleting more

Open iPhone Storage and look at the full breakdown. Apps, downloads, messages, and system data may be the real constraint. If Photos is still large, inspect videos and screen recordings first; our large-video guide shows how to view file size.

Do not keep deleting valuable photos just to chase a delayed number. Use Swyper for deliberate review, then give the device time to finish its storage work.

Common questions

How long should iPhone storage take to update?

There is no guaranteed interval. Large libraries can need time for deletion, indexing, thumbnail cleanup, iCloud synchronization, and the storage estimate to recalculate. Check again after the phone has spent time on power and Wi-Fi.

Will emptying Recently Deleted free space faster?

It can permanently remove the remaining files, but it also removes the easiest recovery path. Review the album carefully and protect important media before using permanent deletion.

Why did Photos stay large after I deleted small images?

Videos, Live Photos, screen recordings, and downloaded originals may dominate the category. Inspect the largest media first and remember that optimized local copies are managed dynamically.
