Understand what a Live Photo stores
A Live Photo combines a key still image with a short period of motion and audio. The exact size varies with scene detail, device, format, and processing, so there is no universal multiplier that applies to every capture.
Check the individual file information
Open the photo and swipe up or tap Info. Apple lists file size, capture device, lens, date, and other metadata in its photo information guide. Compare several similar captures rather than assuming the largest-looking thumbnail uses the most space.
Keep motion when it adds meaning
A laugh, first step, moving pet, or changing expression may be the reason the photo matters. For documents, screenshots, and repeated static scenes, motion may add little. Judge the memory before the megabytes.
Review repeated Live Photos carefully
Compare similar takes at full size and keep the strongest moment. Swyper can help you review the library one item at a time, but the decision about whether motion matters remains personal.
Common questions
Can I see the size of a Live Photo on iPhone?
Open it and use Info. The details shown can include file size and capture metadata.
Does turning off Live Photos shrink old photos?
No. Changing the camera setting affects future captures. Existing items keep their stored media unless you deliberately edit or export them.
Should I convert every Live Photo to a still image?
No. Conversion can discard motion or audio that gives the image meaning. Use it selectively and keep a backup of irreplaceable originals.
