Confirm the birthday in the correct contact
Open Contacts and verify the month and day. If the person appears in more than one account, check linked or duplicate cards. A date stored in a note field will not behave like the dedicated birthday field.
Show the Birthdays calendar
Open Calendar, tap Calendars, and enable Birthdays. Apple documents this switch in its multiple calendars guide. Pull down to refresh the calendar list after changes.
Check default birthday alerts and notifications
Open Settings → Apps → Calendar → Default Alert Times → Birthdays. Then confirm Calendar notifications are allowed. The event and the notification are separate layers; both need to be configured.
Allow time for iCloud updates
Apple notes in its sync troubleshooting guide that the iCloud Birthdays calendar may not update immediately. Confirm the correct default account, refresh Contacts and Calendar, and wait before recreating the date in several places.
Common questions
Why is the birthday in Contacts but not Calendar?
The Birthdays calendar may be hidden, the contact may be in a different account, or synchronization may still be pending.
Why is the birthday visible but there is no alert?
Check Default Alert Times for Birthdays and Calendar notification permissions. A visible event does not guarantee an enabled notification.
Should I add a second calendar event as a fix?
Only after identifying the sync issue. A duplicate event can create two alerts later when the original birthday calendar catches up.
