Choose where the independent copy will live
Use a Mac, Windows PC, external drive, or storage service you already trust. For irreplaceable media, keep more than one verified copy in different places. Decide whether you need original files, edited versions, albums, or all of them before starting.
iCloud Photos keeps a synchronized library across devices; it should not be mistaken for a second, untouched archive. A deletion can synchronize to the other devices.
Transfer with Apple’s supported methods
Connect the iPhone to a Mac and import with Photos, or connect it to a Windows PC and use the supported Windows import workflow. Apple’s current photo transfer guide provides the steps and explains how iCloud Photos changes the process.
If optimized copies are on the iPhone, the original may need to download before certain transfers. Make sure the device has power, a stable connection, and enough time to finish.
Verify the copy before deleting anything
Open a sample from the beginning, middle, and end of the transfer. Play several videos all the way through. Check file count, dates, image quality, and whether important edits or metadata came across in the form you expect.
Disconnect the iPhone or view the files outside the synced Photos library to confirm the destination is genuinely independent. A thumbnail in another app is not proof that the original is safely stored.
Clean the library in reviewable batches
Once the copy is verified, delete only items you no longer want in the active library. If iCloud Photos is on, the deletion affects the synced devices; Apple explains that behavior in its delete and recover guide.
Use Swyper for a one-at-a-time review with a cleanup bin, or follow our large-library cleanup plan. Keep the independent archive unchanged until you are confident the cleaned library is complete.
Common questions
How do I know the transfer is complete?
Compare counts and dates, open photos from several parts of the archive, and play multiple videos completely. Verify the files from the destination rather than relying on thumbnails or a progress message.
Is importing to a Mac with iCloud Photos a separate backup?
Not necessarily. If the Mac uses the same synchronized library, deletions may propagate. Export originals or use a backup method that creates an independent copy.
Should I keep the archive after cleanup?
Yes, at least until you have reviewed the cleaned library and any synchronization has finished. Irreplaceable media deserves more than one verified copy long term.
