Check Recently Deleted first
Open Photos → Collections → Utilities → Recently Deleted. Unlock the collection if asked, select the photo or video, then tap Recover. Apple says deleted items stay there for 30 days before they are permanently removed; its recovery guide provides the current steps.
If you deleted several items, select the ones you need and recover them together. Then check the regular library to make sure they returned. Do this as soon as you notice the mistake rather than waiting until the end of the 30-day window.
Understand iCloud Photos before looking elsewhere
When iCloud Photos is enabled, deleting an item on one device removes it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Recently Deleted also syncs. A second synced device is therefore not automatically a safe spare copy. Apple states this in its Photos guide.
If an image is not in Recently Deleted, search the library by date, place, person or text; it may simply be hard to find. Apple’s Photos search guide lists those search options.
If the 30 days have passed
Check for an independent copy that existed before the deletion: an export to a computer or drive, an attachment you sent, or a backup service that stores a separate copy. Whether a backup can restore the item depends on how and when it was made. Avoid any service that promises certain recovery after the item has been permanently removed.
Do not permanently delete other items from Recently Deleted while you are still checking. If the missing picture is especially important, preserve the backups you already have and verify their dates before changing settings.
Prevent the next mistake
For routine cleanup, select small batches and review the final list. Our duplicate photo guide explains when to merge and when to compare similar shots by eye. Swyper holds a selection in a cleanup bin so you can remove items from the batch before confirming deletion. The app has a free daily delete allowance, and Premium is optional.
