Screen Time can be a list of numbers you glance at, or a tool for agreeing on what a good day with a phone looks like. Apple's iOS 27 update adds new family controls and makes existing controls easier to find. Here is what changed and how to use the new choices without turning every request into an argument.

Ask to Browse: approve a new site

Ask to Browse lets a parent require approval before a child opens a new website in Safari. That creates a pause and a chance to talk about why the site is useful or concerning. It is a tool for deciding together, not a substitute for discussing what the child is trying to learn or do.

Try making the rule understandable in advance: explain which kinds of sites you expect to approve quickly and when you might look at a site together first. If approval requests pile up, revisit the setting. A boundary that everyone understands is easier to follow than a surprise block.

Time Allowances: start with categories

Time Allowances let parents manage time across app categories such as Games, Entertainment, and Social Media. Apple says its suggested starting points are tailored by age. Treat those suggestions as a starting point, then look at the family's actual routine: school, travel, downtime, and weekends can feel very different.

A practical first week is to pick one category and agree on a limit that you can review together. Then use the new Screen Time overview to see whether the rule matches reality. If it keeps interrupting something important, adjust it rather than stacking on more exceptions.

What else changed?

Apple says Communication Safety now covers gore and violent content as well as nudity in shared images and videos, including live FaceTime. The redesigned Screen Time view gives parents a faster look at use and access controls. These are helpful prompts and controls, but they cannot replace a child feeling comfortable telling an adult about something upsetting online.

The details are in Apple's announcement of the new child safety features. Apple also offers a family digital habits guide developed with the American Academy of Pediatrics.

A calm way to get started

  1. Update the family's devices. Apple says all devices in a Family Sharing group need the current platform updates to use the new Screen Time update.
  2. Choose one problem to solve. Is it unfamiliar websites, late-night games, or a category taking too much time? Start there.
  3. Explain the reason. Tell your child what the rule is for, how approvals work, and when you will revisit it.
  4. Review after a week. The overview can inform a conversation. A number alone does not tell you whether a day went well.
Availability note: Apple says some features vary by region, language, and device model. Check its current feature page if a control is missing on a fully updated device.
