Open the Screenshots collection

In Photos, tap Collections, scroll to Media Types, then tap Screenshots. Apple documents this location in its screenshot guide. The collection is more focused than scrolling through your entire library.

Before selecting everything, scan for screenshots that still serve a purpose: receipts, tickets, addresses, instructions and personal notes. A screenshot is often a temporary reminder, but some are records you may need later.

Select and delete a batch

  1. Tap Select in the Screenshots collection.
  2. Tap the captures you no longer need. For a long run of adjacent images, dragging across the grid can make selection quicker.
  3. Check the selection once more, then tap the trash button and confirm.

The same selection flow works in other Photos collections. Apple’s Photos deletion guide covers multiple items. If you are unsure about a capture, leave it out of this batch and decide later.

Keep information, not just images

For a receipt, make sure you can still find the order number and purchase date somewhere useful. For a travel screenshot, save the booking reference in the app or document where you would look for it. A temporary verification code is usually not worth keeping after it has been used.

If you are searching for a particular screenshot first, Apple Photos can search visible text such as an email address or phone number. Try a distinctive word, then return to the Screenshots collection. Our finding screenshots guide gives more examples.

Know where deleted screenshots go

Deleted screenshots move to Recently Deleted for 30 days, where they can be recovered. If iCloud Photos is on, deletion also syncs to your other devices. Do not treat another synced iPhone or Mac as a separate backup. Apple’s recovery instructions explain how to restore a mistaken deletion.

After a careful first pass, repeat the review monthly. A few minutes at a time is easier than sorting thousands of captures at once. If you need automatic labels and search across screenshot text, Tagshot is an upcoming option; it is not yet on the App Store.
